The Keep by Jennifer Egan
This is one of those novels that you really, really, really should not read the ending of before you get there, because the whole enterprise rests on a plot twist. That said, this novel probes the depths of a European castle that some Americans are renovating and the life of a teacher leading a writing workshop in prison -- the two stories are connected by a secret passage of plot. This novel works as an exploration of space as well as time.
