Top 60 Novels of 2000-2009 Countdown, No. 32

Company by Max Barry

The more I work on this list, the more I realize my favorite genre for fiction is satire and comedy. This novel sends up corporate America like nothing else I've read (Then We Came to the End is slightly more serious). A newly minted MBA grad gets a job in a Kafkaesque environment (and do you think it's cool that Blogger's spell check knows Kafkaesque?): a company where no one quite knows that they're making. The secret gets revealed about a third of the way through the book, and Barry brilliantly lets the conceit play out to its hilarious conclusion. The book on CD presentation was especially good.
