What I'm Reading Monday -- Jan. 11

Blog post for What I'm Reading Monday:

Finished: Mr. Sampath -- the Printer of Malgudi: This one fulfills several book challenges. My review is in my previous post.

What I'm reading now: I'm in one of those weird phases when I can't commit to something I'm going to finish reading. I picked up Gene Wolfe's An Evil Guest again because it will help fulfill the fantasy and clear your bookshelves challenges, but I'm also reading, off and on, Generation A by Douglas Coupland and Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. Any of those books will help to finish the Winter Challenge -- I'm saving the last one in that challenge (author's first or last name starts with L) for Free Food for Millionaires, which, at 570-something pages, will count toward the Chunkster challenge, which starts Feb. 1. So I think I'll polish off An Evil Guest, somewhat unenthusiastically. Plus, I have to start readig for the library science class I'm taking -- I'm entering the final quarter of the degree program, and it's all electives from here. Plus, I've taken out a couple of titles from the library, Home by Marilynne Robinson and The Silver Bough by Lisa Tuttle (which would also count in the Winter challenge). Still, I may end up reading the other two novels in the Narayan collection, because I liked Sampath so much -- The Financial Expert and Waiting for the Mahatma.

I saw Await Your Reply on your Shelfari sidebar. I'm in the middle of the audio and it is just fantastic. I have some suspicions of how it may end... but I don't want to ruin it for you if you're waiting to pick it up. I will say that it could be my favorite book of 2009 (though I'm reading it in 2010).

With Await Your Reply, I stopped reading at the part about the severed hand -- I'm really squeamish. But I think I'll be able to get through it this month.

Hate when I get in those moods...lol. Right now, I am pretty focused. I think the side challenge has helped me read at a frantic pace. You're really staying on track with your reading challenge. I get so flaky at times.

Have fun reading this week!
