The author gets major surprise points for me that the sexual tension and euphoria is between the husbands. Their brief torrid affair (the novel takes place over a 2 week period) brought on by the need to escape the Nazi occupation (and inherent fear) was believable and not prurient in the least. All four characters are delightfully self-centered and amazingly self-absorbed.
