Top 60 Novels of 2000-2009 Countdown: No. 50

This book was something of a surprise; I remember picking it up on the new shelf at the Northwest Library in Reno because it seemed to be a literate fantasy novel. Sure enough, it was, and it ends on a question mark. The novel spans two continents, takes us to Texas, London and the wilds of Scotland, and involves a "fairy folk" that are a far cry darker than Tinkerbell. At the core is a string of mysterious disappearances over which a detective obesses, and his obsession, in search of a young woman, leads him into the dark reaches of a mythic world made painfully real.
